Business West, alongside Swindon Borough Council and Swindon and Gloucestershire Mind, brought local employers and businesses from Swindon together to discuss the crucial topic of mental health support and employee wellbeing in the workplace.
Last week I was privileged to attend a special service, in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen in Bath Abbey, to mark the 850th anniversary of the St John’s Foundation. She was accompanied by Mohammed Saddiq, now Lord Lieutenant, but not long ago an active participant in our Initiative activity.

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we have taken a moment to talk to various Business West colleagues about their experiences starting their careers as an apprentice.
Last week, business leaders from the Bristol Initiative membership came together to discuss ESG – Environmental, Social and Governance. We were kindly hosted by Initiative member and leading UK law firm Burges Salmon at its fantastic offices in Temple Quarter. Also present were business leaders from The Bristol Port, Hargreaves Lansdown, GWR, EDF, The Grand Appeal, JLL, Babbasa, Socius, Arcadis and Stride Treglown.
Barry recently joined the Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) team at Business West as a Business Skills Advisor. He has a wealth of experience speaking to businesses across the region about their skills needs, and will be the host of our new Skills Clinics – where businesses can have the chance to discuss their workforce needs, receive tailored recommendations for their businesses and feed into the LSIP for their region.
Business West has recently employed a new apprentice, to work in the Estates Team at Leigh Court. As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we spoke to Sam Shinner, Estates and Operations Manager, to find out more about what it is like having an apprentice on his team, the benefits it has brought the business and how it has impacted him and his colleagues.
